During The War
In 1991, a civil war broke out in Sierra Leone, Africa. This war lasted for more than a decade. The two sides fighting were the national army and the rebel army, also known as RUF, or the Revolutionary United Front. During this time, the rebel army abducted children from the villages they attacked and occupied. From 15,000 to 22,000 children in total were abducted and forced to serve the army. Many were forced to use alcohol and drugs, and some were even sexually abused. They were to perform domestic chores and commit acts of violence. These children cam to be known as child solidiers.
After The War
After the war ended, Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration programs, or DDR programs, targeted children who were formerly associated with fighting and armed groups. They attempted to prepare children to return to their homes. They also tried to give these children a good education. Though this plan is a great plan, these children still face emotional trauma and the impact of the war.
What We Can Do
